The American Bully Kennel Club, often called simply the ABKC, was founded in 2004 in  appreciation of the American Bully dog breed. A combination of the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Bully breed was first created in 1990, and integrates the best qualities of both dog breeds while diluting some of the more aggressive traits. The ABKC gives owners of these strong animals the chance to come together and bond over their appreciation of this dog breed, and learn from each other as well as educate the public about the benefits of the dog. This organization requires registration to join, and once approved members can attend events and enter their animals into competitions.

American Bully Breed

The American Bully breed has been created with specific personality traits. The loyalty of the terrier breeds was maintained, but overly aggressive traits have been bred out over time, making this breed particularly good with humans and a faithful side kick. Physically, the dog has coarse, stiff hair and a high set ear. You can find American Bully dogs in a variety of different colors and hair patterns. The dogs have a deep chest and the legs are set apart, and the heavier stature is known as a bully frame. American Bullies were created to be physically strong while also serving as the ultimate companion pet. The dogs are generally thought to be friendly and outgoing, with an affectionate temperament.

ABKC Mission

The mission of the American Bully Kennel Club is chiefly to bring together owners of this dog breed and promote the positive qualities of the American Bully. Because part of the dog’s heritage is within the pit bull family, some owners face the assumption that their animal is overly aggressive and even violent. The ABKC hopes to dispel the myth that American Bully dogs are a threat, and introduce a positive image to the breed among dog owners and the public in general. The organization also hopes to break stereotypes about the type of people who own a dog in the bully family, since they believe the breed makes a great pet for a large demographic of the public.

ABKC Events

American Bully Kennel Club events are a chance for American Bully owners to get together is camaraderie, but also let their pets shine in a competitive atmosphere. The organization sponsors events across the country throughout the year. Competitive events often include weight pull tournaments. These races give bullies the chance to pull increasing amounts of weight on a cart or sled, with the animals who pull the most weight the full distance being awarded titles and sometimes other prizes. Events also feature a junior showmanship award, so young American Bully owners get the chance to show how well they have trained and can handle their animals. A panel of judges determines the outcome of these competitions. In order to participate in any of these events, you need to register in advance and may be responsible for an entry fee.

The American Bully Kennel Club reserves the right to refuse any dog from membership, especially since this breed is relatively young and the purity of the breed is still being established as a result. Your dog must be registered with a breeding registry, such as the American Dog Breeders Association or the United Kennel Club. In order to gain entry into the American Bully Kennel Club, you must also fill out a form and send it in along with your certificate of pedigree that shows the last four generations of the dog’s heritage. You also need to show proof of your ownership, and a nominal fee applies per dog that you want admitted into the club. Junior handlers have a separate registration form. For more information about getting into the ABKC, you can visit the official website at theabkcdogs.org. The ABKC registers bullies, pitbulls, and bulldogs.

American Bully dogs are a beautiful and friendly dog, often plagued by their association to other, more aggressive dogs. However, with the aid of the American Bully Kennel Club, the reputation of this bully dog is slowly changing as people understand their loyal and friendly true nature. As with any dog, however, your American Bully pet should be socialized with other animals and people at a young age so that it’s not scared or apt to be protective when a stranger comes over. The ABKC offers a great way for American bully owners and the public alike to become educated on all of the traits of this breed.
